1.1 Apply understanding of a range of processes to support media activities.

Raster and Vector Image Making

The Task was to compare the difference between Photoshop and Illustrator, I identifying the differences between raster and vector. I will be explaining the use of tools, techniques, methods and processed within this subject

Main section

I had come across Photoshop in my two years of my art and design course level one and two in college but was not fully introduced to the program and how it works since the art course was more traditional work.

Photoshop a program from adobe. It is a raster based program so it’s good when it comes to pixel art and textures for 3D models, it’s most known for its use in photo manipulation for advertisement and marketing. When zoomed in closely on an image in Photoshop, this raster based system makes the image appear very pixelated. This is different between Illustrator and its vectors are because no matter how far you zoom into a vector, you can’t see any pixelation in the image, Illustrator is continuously clear as you zoom in. Illustrator is known to be used for logos or icons of some kind for a company or brand. Illustrator as in the title is also used for illustrations for games or just online artists.

To test these programs, we’re told to create android logos. One on Photoshop and one on Illustrator. Using a 100 x 100-pixel canvas and Changing the present setting to Web we looked up the android logo hex (meaning its colour code) which was #A4C639. We then put it into the # box that is in the colour options for both program by double clicking the square with your selected colour in it, you can use the eye dropper tool but using the hex code in the colour options is most effective.

Illustrators Has a different layout for colour selection compared to Photoshop, as Photoshop has two blocks of colour so you can switch from one to another colour to use. illustrator has a block for colour and a block with a gap in the middle for the line colour, if you were to make a shape in illustrator you could pick the colour for the shape and a colour for a line around the shape. For this project, we needed to leave the line colour select blank so the shapes, when made, will not have a noticeable around the edge.

In Photoshop one of the main features is the layers if you have two shapes one on each layer you will find out that if you pressed CRTL and the A key which is the select all shortcut, you will find out that it will only select everything that is the layer you’re on. You can change the opacity of a layer so you can see through the anything that is on that layer. Illustrator has layers but it’s not always out on display like it is Photoshop. In Photoshop if you want to cut a shape a certain way, you have you left click on the layer and press rasterize and that I’ll enable you to cut the shape and morph the image as much as you wish.

In Photoshop if you want to cut a shape a certain way, you have you left click on the layer and press rasterize and that I’ll enable you to cut the shape and morph the image as much as you wish. The reason for it not being rasterized at the start is because if you have forgotten to add anything to the shape like lines of if it’s the wrong colour, or if you wanted to edit the shape while you make other things so you’re not adding everything and having to go back and do it.

In abode Illustrator the Illustrators Colour tab opened

It is easy to show the difference between the two processes. If I zoom in on the logo of the Android in Photoshop (the raster one) I get the following effect:

Photoshop raster on logo
Illustrator vector on logo

3D modelling

The task was to make 3D models in 3DS max 2015 with textures, bump maps,  to render them. In this, I will be explaining the tools, methods, techniques and processes in this task. I will show you models that I have made and then explain how I created them and what I needed to create them.

Main section

3DS max is a 3D modelling program which I have been using to produce 3D models that I also have learned how to texture and render. Before joined the course, I tried to figure out how to use a complicated program known as Blender which is another 3D modelling program. It’s a program that is quite complicated and not too nice when it comes to beginners. even before I joined the course I was shown how to use the program in autumn school, I found it much easier to work with. we created quick models of plans and aircraft to test a few features in the program.

3Ds max and Photoshop works better with each other for the texturing and bump maps. When texturing you need to save a the UVW template of the 3D model, which is basically an open net of the model, So if you had a box you will have a net of all six sides laid out. First, you will need to go onto the modify tab and open the UV editor, and then you will want to go to the open out the net so that not everything is overlapping unless it will be just one colour. Once you have the laid, out net you will want to go into tools and render UV template and then you want to save the template as a PNG. When you save a PNG of the net and open it in Photoshop using the layers and a tool, paint bucket to make a black background behind the Layer with you net, This will show your let better so you can see where you’re placing your textures. Then you need to make another layer under the net to place the colour or texture to the parts of the net where you want the texture to go onto you model. After doing all the colouring you need to you need to make the net layer invisible and save the coloured UV png as a Photoshop file. Then in 3Ds Max you need to open up material editor and place the Photoshop file onto one for the orbs that are visible. Then you will drag the orb with your texture onto the model if you want to see how the model looks and if the texture is the right colour or place.

When I joined the course, the tutors asked me to make a model of a wooden crate that was textured and had a bump map. We first started off by making a simple cube in 3Ds Max.

2.2 Critically compare a range of communication methods used to convey meaning in creative media production

This task was to Identify the types of digital sounds, their uses in and the processes of how there made and implemented and the techniques. In this, I will also evaluate the uses of sound and will give examples.

Foley is a way of creating sound. What I mean is some people act out the sound. If say you had a film where someone was talking or running down a corridor, you would have someone act it out on the same floor, in the same shoes and at the same speed. You would have to change a lot of what you use and where you use it. If you just want the sound of footsteps on a marble floor that echoes through the room or place the character is in, you need to find a room that is not contaminated with any over sounds. Contamination meaning that there are sounds in the background that you do not want in the recording of the sound you are making. You would need either a room that echoes or a program that can make the found echo. You would also either need right flooring or if you have a piece of the flooring if it is assessable and where the same shoes.

If you are limited, too types of items for Foley there are ways of improvising. Say if you needed to have a sound like someone walking on gravel but you were limited to what you could use or where you can go, you could use cereal to make the sound of gravel, or if you needed the found of bats wings, you could use a pair of leather gloves. Even you making sounds with your body can work like, whistling like the wind, Imitate an animal found using your voice, use feet or hands for any types of clapping, stomping and others.

For a comparison of sound usage, let’s think of a game and an animation. In a game, you always have sounds for any triggered events. such as if you use a gun in a game you will know when you have shot because the gun will make a sound notifying you that it has fired, it will also make a sound for any target it hits, depending how close it is. with an animation, you will hear the gun go off and it hitting or flying in whatever direction it has been fired in. this is different to games because you are not the one triggering the event but you can identify when the gun goes off, and in an animation, you are not the one with the gun so the volume is not up close. With most games, you will be wearing headphones and most films you would be watching on a tv or big screen. In games, there would be a theme or piece of music that will play one cue with something whether it’s you triggering an event or cutscene or like in a horror game, there would be an ambience to tense the player, making them unaware of what to come. It is strong because they are being up in the position of the character and they need to make the decisions, so the ambient music always makes the player tense and can even mislead the player into thinking that something dramatic happens. For example in Resident Evil 7

This can also happen in TV shows but your not the one in the position of the character so sometimes the music has to be different to work the same way, sometimes having little to no music allows for certain scenes to have more importance in the film and allows characters to have a moment. In this example from Stranger things
